A Legacy of Medical Excellence & Compassion
Imagine a place where healthcare goes beyond just medicine, a medical institution where every patient is treated not just with clinical expertise but also with a deep sense of care and humanity. This is what Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore stands for.
Established over a century ago by Dr. Ida S. Scudder, a pioneering medical missionary from America, CMC has become one of India’s most respected medical institutions. Dr. Scudder’s vision was to create a place where people, especially women and underprivileged communities, could access high-quality healthcare.
“Not to be Ministered Unto, But to Minister.”
This motto emphasizes the idea of selfless service. It means that the focus is not on being served or receiving care, but on actively serving and caring for others. It highlights a commitment to putting the needs of others first and providing help, support, and compassion, particularly in a healthcare context.
Guided by this value, CMC Vellore has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a small one-room clinic back in 1900.
Can you imagine that? From such modest roots, it has now become one of the top medical institutions in India that has imparted over 100 years of medical education.
Every day, the hospital opens its doors to over 9,000 patients from all walks of life, near and far, trusting the hospital’s expertise and care. It’s not just about treating symptoms—CMC focuses on nurturing a community of healthcare professionals who genuinely want to make a difference.
They’re dedicated to advancing treatments, training future doctors, and making sure that healthcare remains compassionate and accessible. It’s a place where care and innovation come together to shape a healthier future for India.
History of CMC Vellore
Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, the founder of Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, was born in India in 1870 but spent much of her childhood and received her education in the United States. She returned to India in 1890 when she encountered a series of events that deeply impacted her.
Three men from different religious backgrounds approached her for medical help during childbirth complications, which she was unable to provide due to her lack of medical training. This experience motivated her to pursue medical studies and dedicate her life to improving healthcare for women in India. She established CMC Vellore in 1900, initially as a small clinic and later expanding it into a full-fledged hospital, emphasizing women’s health and training female doctorsnes
